Integrated Management Systems

Programme overview

An integrated management system (IMS) combines all related components of a business into one system for easier management and operations -

  • This can involve combining different disciplines such as Quality, Environmental and Health & Safety
  • It can also involve combining different sector-specific quality management standards such as Aerospace & Defence (AS9100), Automotive & Motorsport (IATF 16949) and Rail (IRIS)

In all cases ‘integrated’ means combined; putting all the internal management practices into one system but not as separate components. For these systems to be an integral part of the company's business system there have to be linkages so that the boundaries between processes are seamlessly managed and executed without duplication.

In fact the need to integrate the quality management system requirements into the organization’s business processes is a new requirement for all sector-specific standards based on ISO 9001:2015.

Programme details

An integrated management system results when an organization uses one single business management system to manage multiple aspects of organizational operations and performance.

There are many good reasons for adopting an IMS, for example to:

  • reduce duplication and therefore costs
  • reduce risks and increase profitability
  • balance conflicting objectives
  • eliminate conflicting responsibilities and relationships
  • diffuse the power system
  • turn the focus onto business goals
  • formalise informal systems
  • harmonise and optimise practices
  • create consistency
  • improve communication
  • facilitate training and development

The scope of an IMS should cover the totality of the organisation’s purpose. Processes and systems and embrace quality, health, safety, environment, security, human resource, finance, marketing, public relations, etc. In fact anything that is relevant to the organisation’s mission, vision and values.

It is characterised by the following benefits:

  • Management review will consider the purpose, policy, strategic direction and objectives of the organization
  • Internal audits will be conducted for the whole business and not separately for each of the management system standards
  • Documentation is harmonised and consistent in style resulting in a major reduction in replication while ensuring the effectiveness and performance
  • The organization’s processes are structured to controlled in the most effective and efficient way and do not slavishly follow the clauses a specific management standard or customer/regulatory requirement
  • Each component of the management system takes account of all of the other components as appropriate ensuring full conformity with applicable requirements
  • The integrated approach to planning business operations will make use of the process-approach and embody risk-based thinking and the P-D-C-A cycle
  • There will be unified management support with clearly assigned responsibility and authority at all levels

Programme benefits

TEC approach the design, documentation, and implementation of an IMS in three 'i' steps -

  1. We work with the management team to “identify” the organization's processes and then ascertain risks, planning of objectives and strategic measurable plans for each process, and requirements and resources tied to the process.
  2. We then “insure” the provision of support systems - resources, documentation, training, communication for operational control of the business processes.
  3. We “improve” the operational control and effectiveness by looking at the monitoring, measuring, analysis, and evaluation – as well as audits, nonconformance, corrective action, continual improvement initiatives and management reviews of each process.

MEGGITT Precision Micro’s IMS (integrated management system) now includes IATF 16949 and AS9100 in one visual and process-based QMS – with customer Q & D performance monitoring and the active management of process-level effectiveness metrics."Our extremely talented team was able to implement the system and achieve 100% first-time compliance in a matter of months with the help of TEC" said Anthony Marrett, MD, Precision Micro. He continued "We have always sought to achieve the highest standards of quality and the joint AS9100 and IATF 16949 certifications demonstrates our commitment throughout our entire organisation".
